Teledyne's Voyager 300 (Figure 1) liquid cooled spark ignition engine has demonstrated the capability of thermal efficiencies between 36% and 39% (2).
Liquid cooled spark ignition engines were chosen for both record breaking aircraft due to their high thermal efficiencies and reliability.
As illustrated by Figure 5, a liquid cooled spark ignition engine, such as the Voyager model, is a more attractive choice with substantially lower heat losses as compared to a Diesel candidate.
Reflecting the above assessments, it is concluded that the turbocharged liquid cooled spark ignition engine is currently the most attractive candidate for powering a high altitude long endurance aircraft.
